Pregnancy Weight Gain – A Weighty Issue

One of the essential prerequisites for a healthy baby is an adequate pregnancy weight gain for the mother during her pregnancy. You should get insights into the need for weight gain during pregnancy and explore the link between obesity and pregnancy, if you are planning a baby or have just got the good news.
Need For Weight Gain During Pregnancy
The one time where weight gain among women is actually applauded and encouraged is during pregnancy. Various studies have indicated that babies, which do not receive adequate nourishment while in the womb, tend to be smaller and are prone to cardiac problems later in life. Starvation while in the womb leads to stunted development of various organs including kidneys, pancreas, and liver of the baby. A higher rate of infantile death is also noticed among such babies.
Doctors recommend a pregnancy weight gain of at least 20 pounds for all pregnant women, irrespective of their weight prior to pregnancy. The food eaten by women during pregnancy needs to be chosen with care with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, and other seeds, forming the majority of the diet. Consumption of added fats, sugars, white flour, and refined carbohydrates should be minimal even during the progress of pregnancy week by week.
Pregnancy And Obesity
However there is another problem. If unchecked, pregnancy weight gain in some women may even reach the level of obesity. Many women do not bother about their figure after pregnancy, believing firmly that having a baby leads to losing your once perfect figure, forever. Although, this may be partly true, new moms also need to recognize the link between pregnancy weight gain and pregnancy obesity.
A new mother may have several emotional issues to deal with regarding her newfound status of being a mother. For many women, the incessant pressures and responsibilities that go along with her new role may also lead to overeating, which in turn might cause weight gain, change in her body rhythms and ultimately obesity.
Some women also hold firm the conviction that the weight gained while pregnant is permanent and all attempts to get rid of it would be futile. However, they do not seem to realize that it would only take about a year to overcome the effects of pregnancy weight gain and regain their earlier figure.
Determining of the link between obesity and pregnancy could disclose other health issues apart from obesity. A sudden excessive pregnancy weight gain could be indicative of other factors, such as depression or physical factors such as difficulties faced in the course of pregnancy, ailments of the reproductive system or incontinence.
Conversely, a new mom faces another risk due to her pregnancy weight gain. As her body changes to adapt to her weight gain, the effect may be a further increase in weight gain.
To conclude, although a new mom may consider her body on a lower priority scale when weighed against all her duties and concerns regarding her baby, her responsibility towards herself and a healthy body should not be neglected, as her well being is ultimately her baby well-being too.
Pregnancy weight gain is essential with the growth of Pregnancy week by week; however pregnancy obesity is a complete no-no. So check your pregnancy weight gain.

Bleeding During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a joyful time, but it can also be a time filled with worry and concern for many women. Noticing spotting during pregnancy can set off alarm bells for many pregnant women. Is it a sign of problems? Is it your period, which many women swear they continue to get all through their pregnancy? Or is it something completely different? Bleeding during pregnancy can be cause for concern but it can also be normal. So how do you know when to call your health care provider?
What is Implantation Bleeding?
Implantation bleeding is lighter than menstrual bleeding, and consists of pink or brown colored blood. Implantation bleeding occurs when the trophoblast, or tissue that surrounds the egg, attaches to the endometrium and slowly eats its way into the lining. As it does so, it eats through the mother’s blood vessels, forming blood lakes within itself. When these blood lakes form near the surface of the trophoblast, they often cause implantation bleeding.
Many pregnant women have vaginal spotting or bleeding in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. If there is vaginal bleeding early in pregnancy, a doctor will perform a pelvic exam. A blood test may be done to measure human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a substance produced during pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, hCG levels increase, so there may be more than one test. Ultrasound may be used to find the cause of the bleeding.
Sometimes the cause is not found. Special care may be needed if there is bleeding since there is a higher chance of going into labor too early (preterm labor) or having an infant who is born too small.
There are Times to Worry
However, bleeding during pregnancy be a sign of impending miscarriage. Your care provider may want to you to come in to check the baby’s heartbeat or to have an ultrasound check.
You may be advised to put your feet up and avoid physical activity. Studies have shown that this is not particularly helpful in preventing miscarriage, but it makes many moms feel better.
Bright red bleeding could also indicate complications such as a low-lying placenta (placenta previa). This is a situation where the placenta is lying across the cervix. This complication often corrects itself by the end of pregnancy.
The other cause for bleeding during pregnancy is implantation bleeding. It is a condition where a little amount of bleeding takes place in the very early stages of pregnancy (10-14 days after fertilization).
It happens generally when the fertilized egg joins the lining of the uterus. This condition doesn’t last for longer period.
Molar pregnancy is a condition where an abnormal mass (without a baby) develops in the uterus after fertilization process. In molar pregnancy, bleeding during pregnancy is most common. However, it is a rare cause of bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Bleeding during late pregnancy
There are several causes for bleeding during late pregnancy. Sometimes bleeding can be a sign of normal labor; however, any time you experience bleeding during pregnancy you should call your doctor right away. Bleeding in late pregnancy can be a sign of problems with the placenta such as placenta previa or placental abruption. It could also be a sign of a late miscarriage if you are in your second trimester or preterm labor.

Detecting Early Signs of Pregnancy
July 27, 2010 by MyBaby

During pregnancy, the woman’s body undergoes a number of changes. This is because her body is now preparing to incubate the baby and ultimately give birth to it. The first step in prenatal care is detecting the early signs of pregnancy. Once you have correctly detected pregnancy, the rest is taken care of by your medical practitioner.
According to surveys, approximately 40% of pregnancies in the US is unplanned. Quite a few unplanned pregnancies end up in abortion or babies develop developmental problems due to the lack of proper prenatal care. This happens when an unplanned pregnancy goes undetected for a fairly long period of time. So, early detection of pregnancy is important to the health and development of the baby.
One of the earliest signs of pregnancy is the missing of the period. This is one sign that appears in all pregnant women. But it is easy to miss this sign because many women have irregular periods. Stress, medication and emotional problems can cause changes in the menstrual cycle. Thus, this is not a very reliable early sign of pregnancy unless your menstrual cycle is predictable to the day.
During the early phases of pregnancy, there is a lot of hormonal activity within the woman’s body. This will have a corresponding effect on her physical and emotional states. Therefore, a common early sign of pregnancy is sudden changes in dietary habits. Some women unexpectedly feel ravenous and have sharp cravings for certain kinds of food. The main reason for this is nutrient imbalance. When the body is not getting its required supply of nutrients, it induces cravings to fulfill the need. On the contrary, other women go completely off food. They feel mild to acute nausea due to the production of certain hormones. It could only be a feeling of nausea or it may even lead to bouts of vomiting. The characteristic feature of this symptom of pregnancy is that anything can trigger this nausea, particularly thoughts, pictures, smell or presence of some type of foods. Fortunately, most women get over this uncomfortable phase after their first trimester, when hormonal activities settle down, though there are some women who continue to suffer from it throughout their term.
Another important early sign of pregnancy is tiredness and exhaustion. When there is a baby growing within you, your energy levels dip unless you take extra care to fulfill your nutrient needs. However, since most women are already quite energy depleted, this sign too is easy to miss.
Many women experience a sudden increase in the frequency of urination. This is because the growing uterus presses down on the uterus, thus creating pressure.
These are some of the most common early signs of pregnancy. These signs help you detect pregnancy at its earliest stages. Early detection helps you take proper care of yourself and your fetus. This paves the way to a safe and relatively uncomplicated pregnancy and birth.
